I had the pleasure of running an injection molding machine for a few weeks back in 2001. Good info on this link!
The molds take a lot of time to build. Very close tolerance work and sometimes the Injection Mold Machine “operators” damage them.
The quality of the FINISH on your plastic product is determined by how much time and effort the tool and die maker puts into polishing the inside of the mold.
It’s expensive to set up and tool up a shop =)

Did that myself for a year. Boringest job ever. We had mold makers in front, machines in back. We made typewriter ribbons for IBM, parts for Lilly, and ATT&T. Pretty cool how they operate, then they started getting automated ones, they were massive. If you didn’t get the sprue or parts didn’t eject properly, or wait too long before shots, you had problems. Big problems. Got to run a laser etching machine. It was huge too.

I don’t fair well with monotonous jobs like loading CNC machines/Mold Machines. I completely DISSSSliked it =)
I do OK with programming, set ups, job shop work. WHEN I get a licensing deal through EN, I’ll be able to make room in my shop for a CNC Lathe, CNC Mill and a CNC Plasma Cutter.

I used to do business to business collections for a molding company and I’d always find excuses to go into the factory section because…well…it was more interesting than my cubical and after getting a desk job I started missing that smell of a factory…and the Coke and snack machines were all in the factory area.

I would like it better if I owned the facility ;)
