Waiting for my ship to come in...

betzy's Avatarg8_badge

Literally and figuratively! I’m waiting for my ship to come in from China, carrying my newly created item! I’m thinking we have about 40 days to go to receive our cargo.

I’m so excited, nervous, anxious, and hopeful.

We’ve gone through the processes of conception, prototyping, market research, patent filing, business planning, procurring a manufacturer in China, finding a freight liner to deliver our shipment, etc. It’s taken a lot longer to get through each individual step, and included many ups and downs, but perserverance and determination, as well as dreams and hard work, are giving us a vision of a bright and fruitful future.

I want to stand upon housetops and scream out my invention so the whole world knows, but I must wait to be certain our product is of quality and ready to sell.

I trust my contact in China and am expecting great results.

40 days and counting…

Hi Marj,

OK, this is the scoop; At first I sent pics and specs (my project is iron work and welding) They tried three times to get the angles right, but couldn’t quite match my design. So I cautiously sent them my prototype to use as their master sample. They keep in constant contact with me and send pics and updates. Actually, I’ve gotten the best customer service ever from them. When they copied our prototype, the sample was exact as viewed in photos. I know, I know…but I really trust my contact and believe they will give me high quality work. I found them on a reputable international manufacturing site. Also, I searched high and low for a manufacturer in America and couldn’t find anyone that was capable or willing to do my project.

Anyway, hence the anxious and nervous part. But I really think I made the right choices…

Thank you for the encouraging words. I will definitely keep you updated on the progress.

As far as an agent goes, I’m not using one, I contacted the manufacturer myself. So far, the experiece with my contact has been above and beyond expectations. His customer service is excellent. Like I said, they attempted three times to perfect the master sample. And, truely, the samples were so close they may have been acceptable. But they decided to keep working on it until it was perfect. The whole time during that step, they kept in constant contact with me, communicating both good and bad results. I appreciate that because I knew they were working on my project. I didn’t have to try to guess why it wasn’t ready yet.

On the other hand, when trying to get my prototype made in America, I had the exact opposite experience with a certified engineer. He couldn’t figure out my project, but wouldn’t communicate that with me, so I kept wondering what happened to him. After a couple of months of trying to get an answer out of him, he finally told me he couldn’t do it and the problem was that I had distracted him with my enthusiasm! Funny stuff.

I’ll keep you updated on the progress and when all turns out well, I will give my manufacturer a shout out so others can use his service!

You go girl! Seriously! I’m glad to hear of others that are taking on the challenge. I totally hear what you are saying about US manufacturers. I used to be one of them as an employee, but am now one of them as the owner. I manufacture my own for now, and may import some day. US manufacturers (some, not all) are without a doubt, the most overpriced, self delusional, overpriced and under serving group. Not many left, and the few that remain are a mixed lot.

Anyhow, congrats and I hope they arrive exactly as you hope.

Yes, I have plenty of stories and am willing to tell to anyone who wants to listen. Careful, though, my friends at work (you know, the place I go to to earn a living until…“my ship comes in!”) tell me that my stories are much too long and detailed! That’s OK. If you guys want to know some of the experiences, just say the word!

But, to keep it short, the shipping company that I chose is taking care of all the import paperwork, duty fees, customs, etc. and she’s deliverying to my doorstep. Although, I think I’ll go to the port and sit on the dock when I know the ship is on it’s way. How cool is that—to watch your ship come in!

Wow…. I’m thoroughly impressed! “Hard Work” to say the least. Good on you Elizabeth! I hope the reaping reflects the sowing… if so your future will me ‘fruitful’ indeed!

What a daunting trek you undertook! I was staring at that forest around this time last year and trying to decide whether to take that first small step (GIANT LEAP!) into the thicket when I was led here. The idea of splitting the royalties in lieu of braving that forest was (and IS) very appealing and I am glad to have EN currently blazing the trail for my idea. I believe strongly that I will have to look no further but… there’s always that knowledge lurking right under the surface that I could well find myself again staring at that forest, alone and unsure. It’s an intimidating prospect and one I hope I never have to confront but… your post has taken some of the anxiety out of it for me. Thank you so much for sharing!

I look forward to updates and CAN’T WAIT to see your creation. Congrats on blazing your own trail and may these next 40 days pass quickly for you!

Thank you so much for all the great comments.

My ship will be coming into Portland, OR, and since I live fairly close by, I will drive up to see it come in! I’m so excited!!!

I haven’t purposefully ran the gammet on my own (of course I’ve had positive support from my loving husband and family), and sometimes I wish that somebody that really knows what they are doing would take the reigns from my hands and get this bad boy running, but the education that I’ve encompassed over the last several months is priceless.
I love every moment of this journey, even when I run across rejection and problems, because my life is full and exciting. The anticipation of what’s to come is definitely a natural high!
I like to say that I’m starting out in the mailroom learning every aspect of my business. That way, when Betzy becomes a billionaire, I’ll know what I’m talking about when my completely satisfied, happy, never tardy, no call ins, highly paid employees ask a question for me to answer!

This ride is totally thrilling!

I am very very curious about your product after reading that no US manufacturer would take it on. Please keep us informed through this thread what is going on. Thanks. I hope to someday ask to hear your stories when & if I get to hop on a similar ride as yours. Good luck.

Hi Betzy,

I am so excited for you. I know exactly your situation. I had inquired before. I had also search for manufacturing here in US and could not find one or simply don’t have the resource. I also went the same route via having it made in China. My concern is like yours. Quality, quality, quality. To make my story short. I didn’t work out.

Elizabeth, Wow is all I can say and congrats! I too, as with most of us on EN want to tell people about our idea but can’t. We just have to wait until the final product is in our hands. As for China, I would be concerned about the quality too. I have had some good and some bad experiences working with China. Were you able to visit the manufactures facility either in person or online? Did you do your background and history check on the manufacture? In any regard, I wish you the very best, and hope your ship comes in soon!

FYI Yesterday I had some email issues-today, we’re up and running.

The only submission I’ve done so far on EN is the Daymond J challenge. I am to step 2 (is that R or G—-I haven’t yet figured out those terms).
Kathleen, I am excited, too, to have moved up one stage! Every step forward feels like such a success! Isn’t it fun!

As for my product, I’m hoping to launch May 1 and am currently working on my website and launch plans.
With funding pretty much used up, I’m going to start marketing by using email, in-store demos, in-home demos, and word of mouth.

I have faith that we can really grow with those few steps, but if we won a challenge…oh, boy, think of where we could go from there!!!

Thank you, everyone, for your interest in my journey. It’s exciting, educational, fun, frustrating, and glorious!!!

Congtats Elizabeth. I know what a process it is to get a good person in China that you can trust. Just a question for you though. Do you have a DVD presentation for your product? Is it something you are going to sell yourself, piece by piece or are you going to try to have it sold in stores? I only ask because I “WAS” going to go the same route you did on a product and all I would have done would have been to get a sample and a DVD (commercial basically) made first. Send out the DVD’s to potential buyers and order from the factory as I received purchase orders. If I was going to sell the product myself I would have done the same as you though. It’s a lot of effort on your part to get this far. I wish you all the best. And good job.

Hi William,

Thank you.

I don’t have a video yet of my project, but it is highly demonstratable and I plan on making one soon. For the moment, I don’t even have my prototype at hand because I sent it to China to use as a master sample.
I’m going to sell on my website and try to get my product into stores. I’ll start off with in-home demos and in-store demos. I’m hoping to line up an in-store demo for Mother’s Day weekend, which would be perfect for my product!

I found my manufacturer on an international manufacturing import/export site. They are rated by years with this website and feedback from customers. This company is highly rated with many years experience, plus they make and sell a lot of my type of product.

My shipper I found on the web. They ship all over the world and appear to be a bonafide and excellent freight liner. I put in contact my shipper with my manufacturer. They both have awesome customer service!

I’ve heard so many horror stories about quality and conduct dealing with China. Pray that my project will be the exception! I do have faith in them!

Anyway, living in a world of the world wide web (I just love Google), one can find anything! (except someone in America to take on my project…hmmmmmm. There probably is someone out there, but I’m diligent in my research and really couldn’t find a soul!)

Thanks for the great feedback inventors. I love this site with all the new friends that are truely interested in my journey! And, I in yours!

Thanks again, everyone, for the encouraging words.

This site is really great for the friends we meet, walking similar paths, waiting, working, and praying for great results! We’re all on that journey, we all are big dreamers, but also, we take steps to achieve those dreams!

To answer your questions Andrew, my initial container is 20’, with 3400 units. It’s a small first order, but, it’s an order! It’s inventory! It’s the beginning of acheiving my big dreams! I wonder if you can tell I’m excited. I think I was fortunate that my manufacturer took on my project because of the size of my order. I think they usually prefer only bigger (40’ container) orders.

I haven’t spoken with my contact yet about hooking me up with his contacts. Maybe later on.
They are not doing the packaging for me, but I’ve spoken with a company here that has the facility to do it when I’m ready. First, I have to sell some product to have working revenue.
Initially, I’ll be selling on my website and doing in-home and in-store demos. Then, if the plan works out, the revenue from those sales will allow the purchase of my next bigger shipment, plus some advertising, packaging, etc.

Unless, of course, I get Daymond or The Shark Tank or EN to help me!

I’m planning for the least assistant and praying for the best results!

Today I saw a photo of thousands of peices of iron that will be used to make my product.

I didn’t think about it before, but when I saw the photo, I calculated in my mind that my initial order requires approximately 80,000 peices of iron that need to be welded together! Unbelievable!

The bags were stuffed with iron peices, ready to be welded, and there were Chinese characters printed on the bags. It was really cool.

To me, the bags appeared to be filled with gold!

A Utility Patent has been filed and we have a patent pending status. You know, when I first started watching Shark Tank and they’d talk about patents, I didn’t know the difference between Provisional, Design, Utility, or Patent Pending, but it all sounded so mysterious and glamorous! Now that I know all about the different types and we’ve filed a Utility Patent, it feels glamorous!

I was just thinking about the photo I received today. I think I can post it without jeopardizing any agreement on EN. I’ll do that after I write this, but to most, the photo will probably appear simple, uninteresting, and boring. To me, though, it represents hope, promise, and vision.

As far as disclosing my idea, email me and I’ll share, but I don’t think I should expose it outright on EN.

Mcargo was initially expected in Portland on April 23, but with some delays our new expected arrival date is May 18.

I’ve seen photos of my product and have been in contact with my manufacturer and shipper. From the way I read my tracking report, it appears that my shipment actually left Hong Kong a few weeks ago, arrived in LA, and left there this morning.

I received all kinds of legal documents from my manufacturer in the mail today.

This is really cool stuff.

I’m hoping to still try to get to “watch my ship come in”.

On a personal note:

This last month was riddled with tragedy in my family. My 7 month old grandson was brutally attacked by my daughter’s ex-boyfriend. Little Roy is still in Doernbecher, one of the nation’s top children’s hospitals, and overcoming many obstacles in his path. The doctors told us he never should have survived the trip to the hospital, let alone be able to eat, breathe, or have any function of his own. He is proving to be a miracle of God and with thousands of people praying for him around the world (including my manufacturer in China), he is glorifying God by all the advancements he’s making.
If you would like to read about his updates, you can view my facebook page at www.facebook.com/elizabeth.h.crouch.3 Just in case I wrote that address incorrectly, I’m on fb as Elizabeth Higbe Crouch.

Business update!

This weekend I had the good fortune to actually “watch my ship come in”! How cool is that!

I drove three hours up to Astoria, where the Columbia meets the Pacific, and watched the Hanjin London, in it’s full glory, sail past the old Pier 39.

My hotel room window looked out directly onto the Columbia and the barking of sea lions that live next to one of the piers sang through the night. I think I awoke every hour to peak out the window to be sure not to miss my ship.

Thankfully, I urgently felt the need at about 6 am to get up and walk the river path to the historical Pier 39 to wait. I was a little worried I missed my ship because anchored on the river was The Wisdom which was scheduled to arrive after the Hanjin London.

As one huge ship approached under the Astoria-Megler Bridge, I decided to photograph it to see if I could take a decent picture (note to self—-buy a new camera). Much to my amazement and perfect timing, the oncoming ship was the Hanjin London! My ship!
I have a 20’ container on that ship!

The feeling was magical as I watched—-and waved—-as it sailed down the river on it’s way to Portland.

Next step: After receiving my container I’ll test my product.

If the test results are anything like the customer service I’ve received from my contact in China, everything will be perfect!

I’m happy to report that my container arrived yesterday afternoon.

After cautiously opening one of the cartons and inspecting the contents, I was relieved to find excellent craftsmanship with my product! Now, I have a garage full of items and hope to launch before Father’s Day.
Of course, I am a little behind schedule with all that’s been going on the last couple of months, but with the inventory tucked neatly in bed, I can focus on launching the business in the near future.

I gladly give kudos to my contact in China, my shipping company, and all they’ve done to help make this process easy for me during a difficult time. I have made a new friend in China and will definitely recommend him to anyone that needs a manufacturer of iron. I’ve asked him to let me know what materials he manufactures so I can promote him here at EN. Also, the shipping company I used was fantastic—-and affordable.

PS Little Roy had an MRI yesterday and there were no new concerns! His infection is responding well to the anti-biotics. Again, thanks for all the continued prayers. God is listening!

I just love this site…

Today was the plea hearing for the justice for Little Roy.

No plea was submitted, but trial was set for June 26, 1pm, Salem, Oregon.

Little Roy rolled over twice yesterday and we are pretty sure he tracks his momma with his eyes. Hopeful!!!

Working on my website and trying to set a launch date.

Thank you so much for all your prayers and support!

Happy inventing,

I finally am preparing to launch!

With the completion of our website, we’re preparing to take orders.

The launch was pushed back by two months, but preparations have been made, inventory is in hand, I’m excited, and we seem to have a lot of positive feedback already. Our facebook page is liked and our product is cute and easy to use, plus affordable!

What a journey this has been! It all began last August and I think I’ve put nearly every waking hour toward plans and development. When I’m at work, I always think about how great it will be when we’re successful and independent!

Baby Roy improves daily. God is truly listening to all our prayers!

Happy Inventing my friends!

This would make a great gift…better than taking cupcakes to someone in a bakery box! I have my certificates in cake decorating and this would be really nice for cupcakes decorated with roses or any kind of flowers on them!

I shared your website to my FB. I know I have a lot of creative cupcake lovers on there.

Thanks for the great ideas and tips.

I’ve found that keeping an open ear to all suggestions leads to finding the right fit for different aspects of the invention’s journey.

For instance; when my idea was newly conceived, I was speaking with an Engineer that I hired to create a prototype. He had previously invented something and meerly in passing, told me about a trusted website to find manufacturers. Months later, I went to that website and found my manufacturer who has become a respected business connection as well as a friend. He and his family have prayed for Little Roy and we email on friendship terms, not just business.

Anyway, I am paying attention to all your great suggestions and thank you for them.

Little Roy keeps getting better and better! God is good!
He laughs, he says ‘mama’, he kisses, he’s wonderful! Hmmmmm…listen to this grandma!

Hi,

Just a quick update on the trial…

Jury selection has been scheduled for February 4. That seems a little far off to me and I don’t know if it was the DA that requested it, scheduling issues, the defense attorney, or what, but we’ll deal with it as it comes.

Our little man progresses daily and has some of his vision back. His left side is responding more, he rolls everywhere he wants to go, he laughs, and is happy.

I’m very proud of my daughter, Shaanon, for taking such good care of her miracle baby.

Thanks again for all the continued prayers.

Happy Inventing all,

Another hurdle overcome!!!

Today I received a call from my patent examiner notifying me that he is sending me a proposal to allow my Utility Patent. I’ll receive the packet in the mail next week and when the fees are paid, I’ll be the inventor of a UTILITY PATENT!!!

The initiial patent application was filled out by an attorney as I didn’t have the knowledge to file it on my own. When the patent was rejected (expected since 95% of initial applications are rejected for many reasons), I followed the advice I was given in Vegas by Mr. Foreman. He said to call the examiner and chat with him. Find out what changes he’d like made and file the amendment.

The attorney who wrote up the application told me it would cost approximately $1800 to file the amendment. So, I took a good look at the application, studied the verbiage and structure, talked to the patent examiner and filed a ten page amendment myself!

After one more quick non-compliance correction, I felt confident that my patent would be approved.

Today, the news came! A Notice to Approve will be mailed to me and when the fees are paid, I’ll receive the ever so cherished document!

I’M SO EXCITED!!!!

It finally happened! My Utility Patent has been published at USPTO.gov! Anyone wanting to check it out can search using patent #8708166. I’m hoping I get an official copy in the mail, but for now, I printed out a copy so I can peruse it’s beauty! JK! OK, I do look at it with a feeling of satisfaction after all the hard work that has gone into it! I’m very happy!

Not only has it been published, but my dream would be to license it out to a huge crafting company. With serveral initial letters sent out, I’ve already gotten feedback from my most desired company. Just knowing that they are looking over my product gives me butterflies. Seriously, anticipation is so thrilling! I am still working diligently on all avenues of taking my product forward. Work, work, work! All good. I’d much rather be working on an idea than sitting around wishing I had something to do.

Little Roy update: Little Roy is now 20 months old and he amazes us everyday. His recovery is miraculous and he continues to move forward with his development. He can now pull himself up to a standing position while holding onto the couch. And he can take a few steps while holding onto the seat of the couch. He will walk one of these days! He says a few words, he laughs, he teases, he anticipates, he reasons, he’s pure joy.

The trial is set for June 23. Let’s hope they don’t postpone it again! Two months to go.

I’m still loving EN and my EN family!

Happy Inventing!

The trial is June 23-25. The defendent has asked for a bench trial instead of a jury.

Doernbecher Children’s Hospital has 50,000 pages of evidence.

We’re hopeful, but trying to prepare ourselves for whatever the outcome.

Please pray for Little Roy’s continual healing, strength for all of us this week and during the trial, and justice for our little man.

In Oregon, Assault 1, which is the charge he is facing, is a Measure 11 crime and the penalty, if convicted, is 8-10 years approximately. If convicted, as a Measure 11 crime, the judge is not allowed to lower the sentence. Of course we’re hoping for conviction and the max sentence.

The charge Is Assault I in Oregon which is a measure 11 crime. This measure prohibits a judge from reducing a mandatory sentence of 8-10 years if convicted.
Personally, I think an assailant that nearly kills a helpless child deserves more than ten years.
We may try to change the law after we get through this.

Hi Elizabeth,

I hadn’t read this thread before today. After reading I have been inspired by your courage with launching a product on your own and especially for nurturing your little man back to health. I read articles about the crime, it is beyond my comprehension.

Ten years is nowhere near enough punishment for what he did. The only difference between attempted murder and murder is the luck of the victim. If you need the EN community to speak up for victims rights, especially for children, post links to this forum. We will be happy to call or email whomever we can influence.

My God bless your family and continue to give you, and Roy strength.

It just occurred to me to share a quick personal story.

At 6 months old my Mom (in 1937) had a brain tumor. She became one of the 1st people to ever have, the then experimental, radiation therapy. Not only did she survive, but grew up to have a fully functioning, 100% healthy brain. The younger a patient is when they suffer a brain injury, the more likely they are to heal, and maybe heal 100%.

Great to see that Roy continues to improve so much, and look forward to hearing about his progress. Strength and blessings to you both.

betzy's Avatarg8_badge

Thank you,

Daniel: your mom’s story is inspirational and I believe that you are right about children being young when injured. I’ve heard the same thing about the chances are better for thier healing.
Also, if it wasn’t for God giving us a miracle, the, uh, I don’t know what to call him, would be facing a murder charge. During the Grand Jury deliberation, they asked our DA if they could charge him with murder if our baby didn’t survive because baby’s don’t survive this kind of trauma. Gratefully, we were given a miracle.
Being granted a miracle by God is an amazing experience. We could feel His presence all around us, embracing us, comforting us, loving us. He gave us this miracle even though He knows all the challenges and failings we’ve faced in our lives. Unreal.

Lisa: April 2013 my daughter’s ex-boyfriend nearly killed my grandson, Little Roy. His recovery is miraculous and I thank God every single day for letting us keep our little baby. Roy is nearly two now and is doing very well. He says some words, he laughs, teases, does the army crawl, wants to walk, anticipates, reasons, says no a lot, and raises his right arm to answer ‘yes’. He has stolen his grandmother’s heart!

Oh, Aloha Charlie just came by the casino in which I work. What a great surprise. His mom lives nearby so he came by to visit. Isn’t that cool! I love my EN family!

Please pray for us for Monday’s trial.

Thanks Frank.

I’ll be sure to update everyone after the events on Mon. I don’t know if there is a history of violence, but I won’t be surprised if there is.

I am so happy that your grandson survived his horrific assault. We are blessed grandparents, aren’t we!

I’ll be happy when June is finally in the past.

I’m gonna go kiss a baby now!

My thoughts and prayers have been with you all morning.
I haven’t found anything prior on this monster after doing a nationwide check on him, but was surprised to find he was in our Military. Fights our freedom, yet tries to take away an innocent baby’s life. He’s no man, he’s no hero.

Not finding any priors doesn’t really mean much. I know sometimes men have a history of domestic violence, but unless the woman files charges and goes through with them, there won’t be any record of it. I find it hard to believe this incident was a one time only incident and without previous charges against him, we may never know his history.

I’m still digging around though….there’s got to be something out there on him.

Back in my cop days it was disheartening to get a domestic call to the home and get the guy take him to the jail all that paperwork and then having to go to his court date on my day off, and come to find out when it came to hearing from the beaten battered woman , PLEASE don’t take him away please can I post bail for him , I love him so much I want to drop all charges he won’t do it again , or it was me I hit him first or he has never done anything like this before blah blah blah.

I the cop had heard it all, and mostly the girl would come to me before his court date begging for me to drop the charge to a lesser or to speak on the guy behalf , wth , needless I say that the woman would take their babies piggy bank money to bail the monster out, and then beg and plea on his behalf in court and drop the charges, while in the meantime I am out there putting my life in danger everyday to protect her and her kids , even on my days off when I could have been at home with my on kids, I had to go to sit all day and do all this paperwork and the women would just beg to get her man back , sell the clothes off her back to get him home…

Then guess what, yup, I get called there again, and again, and again we do the whole dance over and over again. Then you got the kids like looking at you the cop as saying thank you for getting him off our mama or away from her and us, then they don’t know their mama is going and helping him get out cause she loves him more than she did them.her own happiness with him over her kids safety. Then the cop gets looked down on cause you didn’t keep him locked up well, kids don’t understand and most of the civilians don’t realize it’s not the cops fault, nor the judge it is the beaten battered woman that keeps getting him out no matter the cost, it makes me sick on my stomach thinking about all the times I as the cop did this dance with these folks.

Thank you everyone for your prayers and warm thoughts. And Charlie, it was great to meet you!

This has been an exhausting week, and guess what, we’re not done. Trial has been recessed until Monday. A defense witness flew into town last night and was stricken with kidney stones. He spent the day in the hospital, instead of testifying in court.

I was going to post more details, then I realized I was writing a book!, but since the case is still open I probably shouldn’t post too much info yet.
Let’s just say, I LOVE our DA! She Rocks! I want to start a cheerleading squad just for her…Go Katie, Go Katie! She is bad ass and I wouldn’t want to be on the opposite side of her table!

Going over the timeline and details of our little baby’s tragedy is so emotional for me. It’s weird, though, because there is a strange separation between the baby that was hurt and the miracle child we were given to keep. Watching the trial is like watching a movie. Strange.
One thing, besides our neurosurgeon telling us that Little Roy’s recovery is nothing less than miraculous, the first ER doctor testified that for Roy to survive is a miracle. He was so close to death when he got to the ER that he was posturing and his little 6-month old body was already cold. He was so close to death.

The other thing, after watching the heart-wrenching testimonies of detectives, police, doctors, and nurses, I was amazed at all the people that have helped our little man survive, stay alive, thrive, and now trying to get justice. There are so many more people involved than I even thought about.

After our lives calm down I want to take Little Roy around to these agencies to thank everyone. They will be so amazed to see how well the little guy is doing.

We’re hoping for a verdict Monday night after the witnesses are done testifying. I will check in as soon as we have an answer. Keep us in your prayers! God bless!

Of course my prayers continue to be with Little Roy and the family.
I know it would mean so much for those who have helped Little Roy though all of this, to be able to see him and to see how every one of their involvements played such a big role in his survival and development. I know this because many people think it’s just a job, but they don’t realize that they can’t just clock out at the end of their shift and not think about what has happened or wonder how that person is really doing. Seeing him would really make them realize what an impact they have on other people’s lives. God bless all of them.
