Great interview, Brian. Filled with the in depth, real world advice we’ve grown to expect from you. EN newbies would be wise to search Brian’s name in the forums. He’s not a super frequent poster but his posts are consistently among the best. He provides no nonsense feedback from someone who is a professional product developer. Warning to those whose idea of being an inventor is sitting around with a 6 pack fantasizing about how your one great idea will magically make you rich, Brian has no patience for the likes of you. |

Thank you for the reminder Michelle! Jeremy, Thank you for the very informative lesson, and interesting read. Well done. I never realized what different plastics could be used for. I made a nonworking prototype for an invention I have in the open search. I can feel it will work, but it's not durable. I believe I will use pvc now to make a working prototype. One question please? What is the best way to cut a slit in PVC? Thank you Aloha Charlie |

Great write up by Jeremy! I'm officially schooled in the area of plastics now. I've never given it much thought before, but moving forward as maker/inventor this is very valuable information. I agree with William, on working with PVC, you may also be able to use metal working tools in the same manner depending on what you have around the garage. |

This is another reason I love EN an this community. We all try to help each other succeed. Another question I have is with Polycarbonate. In something as thin as the perky collar Jeremy showcased. Will it flex under a load, such as a pulling or tugging from something being stretched around it? If so is there something inexpensive that would work better? for example, take the load, easily drilled without splitting the material, and formable. Thanks for any help :) Aloha Charlie |

Hi Charlie... PC flexes pretty well. The Perky Collars can be flexed backwards with no trouble. It does tend to be stiff though. Styrene is a great option if you need it to flex in your prototype. It will crease if you take it too far though. You can get small sheets at a hobby store or on McMaster-Carr pretty inexpensively. Does that help? Jeremy |

In terms of manipulating PVC, most standard hand tools will do the trick. We cut it with hacksaws with no proble to make slits, and it drills really well. The ratcheting shears that can be found at home improvement stores are a good option for cutting tubes to length. It is fine to cut on a mill and lathe too if you have access to fancier machine tools. |

Hi Jeremy and thank you for information. I wasn't clear with my words. What I need is a thin rim like the perky collar, but only 1/2 inch wide that would not bend after formed. It could have a 90degree angle to help strengthen and keep the material thin. I did look at Mcmaster- carr yesterday and saw they had thin sheets of PVC. Are they able to bend at a 90degree angle and formed in a semicircle? Is it strong enough to keep it's form with tension on it, or would I need a more another material? I hope my words didn't confuse you. I think that's why I need to prototype :) Thanks again for everything and did you invent The Perky Collar? Have a great day Aloha Charlie |

Thanks Kim and Saletta for the kind words and well wishes. @Kim, I'm hope to not broach that 108 year mark before my first G8. @Saletta, congratulations on hitting that 500,000 point milestone. Hope you enjoyed your call with Louis. I can say the same thing about you with your "tenacity and contribution" to our inventor community. @Michael, I see the points just keep on piling up after hitting the 1,000,000 point milestone. I better get it in gear myself before you lap me. LOL! |

@Derrick: The call with Louis was absolutely amazing! Having watched him on Everyday Edisons for years, then actually getting the chance to talk to him was almost - surreal! Yet, he's so down to earth and approachable, just as I thought he would be. The conversation was engaging and fun. Looking forward to the next milestone. But it looks like I have a lot of catching up to do to meet up with Michael! Hopefully, I won't have to wait that long to see a G8! Congrats again Derrick and Michael! Let's gets some G8's on those pretty little dashboards, shall we? |

Some great insight into the Housewares Show and fellow EN Inventors. Each article gives a unique perspective into the show itself. Although Eric apparently is the prolific inventor, I learned a great deal from his wife, Andrea's report. I actually stopped reading and took notes on how she tackles the trade shows. What a great team! Thank You Liz and Eric for the glimpse inside. |

Ruth truly an amazing gal. Time to declutter..been there and still doing it. Journal is great, but I still like what Eric Huber shared with us years ago. A personal tape recorder. I like to go thru all my recordings every two weeks and declutter it. Save and write down the ideas that are still meaning full. By using this approach my mind is always open for new thoughts/opportunities. And the old thoughts are still there to pursue when/if that moment comes. If you have other ways that work for you please share, so others can find a way that works for them. Definitely a good read Michelle. Thank you Like meditation, a great way to be mindful. @Charlie- Just saw your post in this thread. Thanks for reading it and thanks for the very kind words! Birthday was another day I woke up, saw the sunshine and got to see it go back down again...a win in my book. I still have my AFX cars in a box here somewhere. : ). The Seal Genie will be a product I have to move myself, as all the hose mfgs are all terrified of it...no yearly residual income for them on a product designed to last forever, lol. No biggie. Currently shopping it to the U.S. Navy and after acceptance there, cruise lines. You'd be amazed at how water-phobic these people are about leaks on ships on or under the water. : ) @Michelle- Thanks for that great blog entry on people and their pets...lots of good insight to be gleaned from that! |
